Hazardous Materials Storage Area SWMU

Description

This page describes the RCRA (chemical) cleanup of the Hazardous Materials Storage Area (HMSA) solid waste management unit (SWMU).

The HMSA was a skid-mounted transportable hazardous materials storage building (building 4457) used to support Sodium Component Test Installation (SCTI) operations. Oils, water treatment chemicals, and hazardous wastes were stored here during the operation of SCTI.

A sump in the nearby concrete slab was sampled before removal and found to contain chemical constituents. The storage building sump and slab were removed between 1999 and 2002. Soils surrounding and underneath the concrete slab were sampled as part of the RFI. DOE has submitted an RFI report to DTSC and is working with the agency to complete the closure activities.
