Environmental Monitoring
Information on monitoring and sampling programs in the surrounding community, off-site of SSFL may be found in the Community Health Studies page .
Annual Site Environmental Reports
Annual environmental monitoring at ETEC has been conducted since the mid 1950s. The Annual Site Environmental Report (ASER) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) operations at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) explain:
- Environmental management performance for DOE activities such as environmental monitoring of effluents and estimated radiological doses to the public from radioactive materials
- Environmental occurrences and responses reported during the calendar year
- Compliance with environmental standards and requirements
- Significant programs and efforts related to environmental management.
National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (Radionuclides) - NESHAPs
National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPs) Reports for the Department of Energy's (DOE) facilities at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) are provided for 1991 to present.
EPA Radiological Survey of Area IV
The US EPA is planning to conduct a sampling program to establish radiological background surrounding SSFL. It is also planning to conduct a radiological survey of Area IV.
1995 Area IV Radiological Survey
A radiological characterization study conducted from March 1994 through September 1995 in Area IV of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory. The purpose of the study was to locate and characterize any previously unknown areas of elevated radioactivity in Area IV.
Environmental Monitoring Program Plan (1992 - 1994)
An Environmental Monitoring Program Plan for Area IV of SSFL was prepared in 1992 and later revised in 1993 and 1994. The plan documented the historical and (then) current status of monitoring and cleanup in Area IV from both a radiological and chemical perspective.
Reviews of Radiological Environmental Programs (1988 - 1991)
Several reviews of ETEC's radiological environmental monitoring programs were conducted in the late 1980's and early 1990's.
Area IV 1988 Radiological Survey
In 1988, a comprehensive radiological survey was performed at 25 locations within Rockwell International's Santa Susana Field Laboratories (SSFL) Area IV. The purpose of this survey was to determine if radioactive contamination existed such that further decontamination would be warranted. These locations included facilities and areas where radioactive materials were used (or possibly used) to support AEC, ERDA, and DOE programs.
1978 EG&G Aerial Radiation Mapping of De Soto and Area IV SSFL
In June 1978, EG&G of Las Vegas conducted a flyover of the Rockwell International facilities at Desoto and Area IV of SSFL in order to map radiation exposure levels.
